perhaps a scaled down deal from president obama? >> yeah. i believe we need a big deal, but the more likely possibility, at this point, is it's really focused on a tax deal where they come up with some number between what speaker boehner and president obama talked about, that they address things like alternative minimum tax, and put together a deal that we either try to pass before the end of the year or get agreement to come back right after the first of the year and pass it through both houses. adam: the numbers were something like the president at one point was willing to raise his baht -- bottom line to 400,000. if that's the deal, can you guys, can the men and women in our political leadership pass something before midnight, december 31? >> well, i think so. i mean, and you're going exactly the right direction. if you take what's been put on the table, you got the senate bill, you got the house bill, and you got what president obama and speaker boehner talked about, somewhere in the middle, i think, is a deal we could pass before year e

i did nothing speaker boehner wanted to cut a deal with the democrats anyway. all this stuff is around president bush. it's not all on obama. host: ok. thank you for the call. harry reid said this yesterday. [video clip] >> the republicans have taken the benefit cuts off the table. there is still significant distance between the two sides but negotiations continue. there is still time left to reach an agreement. host: those negotiations moved into the evening. the house coming back at 9:00 p.m. eastern for morning business. votes would happen sometime after 10:00 a.m. front-page of "the new york times." let me read a few sentences. host: that is the front page of "the new york times." good morning from maine. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call. we have been corralled into involuntary servitude. this has been our history. i do not want to support a military and industrial complex that wants to sell arms globally. i do not want to support life- ending measures. this is where we of fallen into a trap. they may want to close a door on us. tomorrow i

at one thirty eastern time today came on the air saying we're very near a deal what's your premonition about this how did this all sort of unravel. well i mean the president tried in democrats of trying to separate well i mean both sides now i guess want this where they want to separate the taxes from the spending so this deal is really only focused on taxes on raising revenue and you have to raise as much revenue so that you don't get hit on the spending side that's really going to be the side that's going to hurt our economy is the spending side and you know you saw the president a few a few weeks ago come out with a one point six trillion dollars number for raising revenue he wanted a big revenue raise and now he's going to maybe if this deal works out and up with only six hundred that's not so good and that means there's going to be huge heavy cuts coming down the road when the debt limit fight comes or when any of these other fights going to come and that's you know that's really good for middle class families family i let's just take a kind of a bigger luck here at this whole pro

do you think mcconnell and boehner are in the mood to cooperate with president obama? >> i do believe they're in a mood to cooperate. speaker boehner's talked for a very lopg time about a grand bargain, a big deal, about trying to find some major solution going forward. but the senate hasn't acted on anything, so i think we have to be careful on just placing the blame on mcconnell or boehner. without adding in to this mix, senator reid. >> will you support whatever short-term deal the republican leadership supports? >> i don't know what i'm going to support yet until i see it. the previous congressman you had was on, interesting enough, his office is right next to mine. the fact of the matter is we're going to have to find a place to come together. that the president has offered a 7% solution for a 100% problem. i was struck by the fact that not a single democrat supported boehner's plan b. that was nancy pelosi's solution. raise taxes on those earning a million dollars or more. not one democrat agreed to vote for it. >> let's talk about that plan brk. it was not succe
